Motorola VT-71 Blonde Cabinet Restoration
I have restored a Mahogany cabinet VT-71 several years ago. It went well and produced a very nice picture. I still have it. In the meantime, I have acquired four more VT-71 sets and one is with the Blonde cabinet. I don't particularly like Blonde furniture but it is more scarce so it get a nod.
It had a severely deteriorated CRT rubber mask, which I should have photographed before I began. I was able to chip it away enough to get the weak CRT out. I used the plastic front from another set on the cabinet since the oozing rubber had compromised the plastic mask. Later today, I will start posting some pictures. For the next few weeks, I am restricted to what I can lift (cataract surgery) so my RCA CTC-28A set restoration has moved to the back burner. I am not allowed to lift over 25 pounds for a few weeks. Some more paper capacitor replacements done today. All of these capacitors were leaky, and some even double leaky with oil running out of it. Only 7 more capacitors left not counting the large electrolytic capacitors. I will probably bring it up slowly on the Sencore PR57 and see what happens. No doubt, the three can multi-section capacitors will need to be stuffed. I will even try it with the selenium rectifiers still in place, but monitor the current draw very carefully.
The nasty goo on the CRT came right off. I stuck the face in a bowl of water and that rubber just melted away. However, this tube is weak according to my notes. But it will be good enough for continued restoration. Thanks for stopping by. |
