An X-ray scoop? Well, maybe they use lead glass in the objective lens.

With my horrible nearsightedness (9 and 11 diopters) I don't need this thing, all I have to do is take my glasses off and push my nose against the safety glass, I can see the dots perfectly! I don't know if this is good or bad 8()

Phosphor Dot Microscope
While your absolutely do not need a microscope to boserve the beam landings on a CRT to perfome purity adjustments, it is a nifty gadget to have. I have a version made by RCA, which allows the dots to be observed while the end of the microscope is about 4" from teh screen. A little fooling around with my digital camera resulted in this somewhat fuzzy picture of the dots on my computer monitor. The dots on a early color CRT would be somewhat bigger.
