The top of my head is coming off!
In a word, Yow!
I discovered this forum this morning and have gotten NO work done all day (and my boss just snuck up behind me!) I'm new at this hobby and already own two b/w consoles (neither of which work, by the way) and only have room for one. My guess is that it's going to get worse before it gets better! The first console is a totally cool blonde Olympic (forgot the model number) that I really want to work but it may not happen--giving the restoration guy too many headaches. My latest purchase (from Saturday) is an Emerson that may be able to be saved. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Turns out the more posts I read, the more questions I have: 1. Where do you guys FIND all these cool sets? I've been looking over the b/w and color set photos and drooling like a halfwit! Why oh why couldn't this be a catalog instead of a forum (I'll take one of those, one of those, two of those...)? 2. Anyone in the Baltimore area good at restoring these vintage TVs? Frankly, I'm too ham-handed and nervous to be poking around high voltage and explosive picture tubes. 3. If not restoration, is there anyone who does color conversions? Besides Harry Poster, I mean. I know this must sound like sacrilege to most of you, but I'd rather have a non-original but working set than a large doorstop. 4. Should I have my head examined for starting up this hobby in the first place? Never mind--I think I already know the answer to that one! Am going to post pics of my babies as soon as I get a chance. Also need to post my wants--color consolette, preferably Silvertone but others considered. Need to scan a page from an old Sears Christmas catalog for the particulars. Okay. Going to TRY to do some work, but I'd say there's only about a 10% chance of that happening! |

Take a look at some of the sets posted in the Hybrid and solid state section, I have many sets including a mint working sears double door maple color console.
I as well as a few of my friends here quite often trade or sell sets, So don't be afraid to ask! |

Veg-o,
Welcome to AK, and the challenging hobby of vintage television acquisition and storage. ![]() I would think that Baltimore would be a pretty good place to find early TV's like round screen B&W's from the 40's and some early color sets. New Jersey was of course where it was all happening then being a major RCA labs location, although I've heard you don't want to go poking around there nowadays. ![]() I've got a couple of vintage TV's I've bought that I need to drive to Baltimore to pick up, and several along the way between there and Toronto. I've been putting off the trip because my van broke down and all I have is this little Toyota Celica and I need to pick up 6 TV's including consoles. I have a big roof rack so maybe I'll just go and overload my poor car. Maybe I'll get down your way sometime soon. Love to see your pictures whenever. We have a great group here. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay. Rob |

Ah, Captainmoody. We meet again!
Well, it's all your fault anyway, since I got my Olympic console from YOU! You ought to be ashamed of yourself, leading me down this path of destruction and general craziness. Oh, well, I *used* to be well-adjusted. Hmmmm. That signature line looks familiar... Bob By the way, I just picked up a cool blonde Silvertone stereo console that will look great with the Olympic. Should I mention that this is my second console in one month??? |

That is an audio device so it deserves a post in generat Audio Discussion forum, unless it is a tubed console, then it needs to go under Tube Audio. You'll get the hang of it. ![]() Rob |
