Call the men in the white coats...
![]() Not as if I have any room for it or anything, but I went out and picked up a Philco 48-2500 projection set this morning It was part of a package deal that included a Philco "Seventeener" and a Hallicrafters 506 parts set. This set is in pretty rough condition cabinet-wise, finish is gone as is the grille cloth but it's not beyond repair. The reflective "Mirror" in the lid has some stains all over it, not sure what cn be done about that yet. It came with a bonus of a possibly NOS TP-400a CRT. I can't test it but it has zero phosphor burns so I would imagine it hasn't been used much if at all. Picture will follow asap. Eric |

2500 back
It looks complete except for the HV cover.
The chassis looks like a regular 10" chassis except for the 3 HV rectifiers and gobs of HV caps for the tripler circuit. You can see the Hallicrafters down in the corner, that set turned out to have one of the brightest, sharpest 7JP4's I've seen in awhile! I should be able to build one good Halli 506 now. BTW, is the 2500 supposed to have a back? (I presume yes?) |

Eric,
I had a 48-2500 so I can also be classified as officially crazy. I brought it all the way home from Rochester, NY on the roof of my Safari minivan. Took 6 of us to perch it up there at the swapmeet. Mine had a raster too. I sold it to finance the acquisition of an even heavier projection set a few years ago. I now enjoy a non restored RCA 9PC41 instead. That screen is soft aluminum with a very fragile micropitted surface. You cannot rub it with a cleaning cloth or it will be marked. It is basically the same screen surface that all those curved screen Advent videobeam projectors in the bars in the 80's had that always got ruined when someone tried to clean it. You have to use non-contact washing technique. It looks to me like you have liquid stains there. Try removing the screen and laying it on its back. Spray some Fantastic spray cleaner in there and let is coat the entire surface for a couple of minutes and then hose it off with warm water from a hose or shower wand. Stand vertically and catch the runoff at the bottom with a bath towel. Use a hair dryer to dry it. If Fantastic doesn't work try Varsol. Rob |

Projector mirror
Uh-oh, more problems.
The parabolic mirror is shot! the aluminizing is more gone than not. |

Eric,
The parabolic mirror can be re-aluminized and even overcoated by people that routinely do telescope mirrors. The set may not be worth the expense with all the other restoration it needs. If the curved screen cannot be brough back I'd not waste further effort. You can get you investment back by selling that good spare TP-400 CRT. Rob |

I might have flipped that vehicle on the long drive home too if the van itself hadn't also been totally loaded with TV's to keep the center of gravity lower. I came back really loaded as didn't sell anything I took with me to sell and then there were about 5 TV's I bought at the meet. I don't have a van anymore but wouldn't let the fact that I'd have to strap it on my roof rack and get 'looks' stop me from bringing home a CT-100 if I found one. ![]() Rob |

Tim's right. Here is how I got my CTC-4 home from Rochester. 3-1/2 hours drive with all the windows open so I didn't get gassed by the exhaust that gets sucked into the car when the backhatch is left open. It was cold too. I had the heat on full and a scarf and wool toque on to keep from freezing my head and neck.

I've done a few things on the road that inadevertently gets looks but this test of a 3 cup wind turbine on the back of my van spinning around while I was driving has to take the award!
![]() It looked really funny! I told people that asked that I had a new invention and was powering my van with windpower! Rob |

Instead of waiting for wind, this setup makes a convenient wind tunnel for testing turbines. You have a buddy taking instrument readings and recording vehicle speed (wind velicity).
