pair of 1948 motorolas
I told myself I was going to stop searching for more sets and only just pick up the ones I happen to find, so I have avoided any online searches for a few months, but I was kicking back infront of the computer here before I go home, and just quickly slipped over to craigslist for the first time in a while, and what do I find, a pair of '48 motos. I sent this guy an e-mail as quickly as I could, 50$ for the pair seemed like a great deal, even if all I get out of it is a not toatally dead 7JP4. I don't have high hopes for the one set which is missing among other things "something out of the HV cage", but still if I get one repairable set and one parts set out of this I will be more than happy.

Adam, they're a little rough lookin, but at 25 bux for the both of 'em...You really can't go wrong. Are these the ones that are fabric-covered, or do they have the natural wood finish? If that's the case, refinishing 'em shouldn't be too hard. Too bad you live so far away, I have an EXCELLENT refinisher here who understands about old TVs & radios. He does a VERY good job, for a lot less than what I could do it myself, & I don't have to fool w/the mess...

Both these were originally wood, just scratched up a bit. Well I'm slowly working up to refinishing my Hoffman, so I guess this will be second. The one set was missing the flyback transformer, and some other stuff, but both sets have good 7JP4s.
So I took the one out of the flybackless set, spent an hour or so cleaning melted gasket off the front of the tube, and put it in the other moto I fixed a few months ago, and took out that really weak one that was in there. For a while I had 3 7JP4s all lined up in a row, it was quite a sight. The other set looks entirely repairable. I haven't checked them yet, but I'm hoping for at least one good ballast tube between the two sets. If I can get 2 working sets out of what started as 3 broken ones that seems pretty good.I got some other stuff too, he had a box full of stuff: about 30 sams folders, including a 1969 index volume, and some factory service manuals as well: most of RCA CTC 7 through CTC 21, and Zenith 1957 and 1960, as well as several packard-bell manuals. I also picked up an old RCA color bar generator. He also had several large boxes of tubes (new and used), and a few old table radios, but I didn't have any more money on me. Although, I'm thinking about e-mailing him back and asking about those tubes. Anyway, these are copper plated chassis, unlike my other one, it should look nice after I clean it up.
