Looks nice. He gutted a tv that didnt work but displayed snow??? Sounds like it was working to me, or atleast a simple rf amplifier change. Probably too new for him as he is a "prewar" tv collector.

I talked with him on the phone and he knows precious little about any tvs. He told me about gutting that set and only keeping the tube.

he told me it had a small fire in it. i wont go any higher on my bid as i have spare tubes. guess he is telling twi different stories.

I can't believe this tube went for $202.75. A few months ago a NOS 21FJ rebuild on eBay only brought around $150.00. Has anyone come across a black matrix version of this tube? I sold my CTC-16 a few years ago and it had a 21VCB22 RCA Colorama in it that was installed in 1975. I sure would like to find another "roundie" with a matrix tube in it!

I am not familiar with the 'matrix' tube. Can you describe it and explain how it is better than the standard shadow mask tri-dot tube?

I also am surprised at the high price that CRT went for.

the black matrix treatment is a black filler between the dot groups.improves contrast.

Very likely less than it will cost you to replace it as soon as you need it. What are you thinking?

These tubes are rare, wake up and smell the vacuum.

rcaman, I agree with rob. HOLD ON to that one!!!! It's VERY rare to have a black-matrix type round tube. I'm still kicking myself for selling my "roundie" that had that tube in it. Granted, I got $400.00 for a CTC-16 which is pretty good, but still..... Also, eBay has been odd on the sales. Some stuff that you would think should bring alot won't. I helped a seller awhile back as they had a 21FJ and I think a 21CY (whichever type the CTC-9 used) that were rebuilds,still in the box. The 21CY brought $350.00, which is good, but the 21FJ only brought around $150.00. and I thought that was low. This used 21FJ brought top dollar and I think the code date on it was 1972. It also looked scratched on the lens from the posted picture, unless that was glare from the camera. In the early 80's we used Sylvania "NewGun" replacement tubes as I think they were the last ones you could get a 21FJ from.

i think my rebuilt 21gvp22 may be a bm.
i will have to look someday.
i cleaned out an old channel master dealer a while back and got several rebuilt roundies and some rectangulars too.
30 asst crts for $100

a 10 fp4 in the lot too

kc8adu, Yep, that tube should be a black-matrix. I can't remember how the numbering codes work, but when a replacement tube for the "old type" picture tubes had a V in it, it meant black-matrix. In our shop we used to install alot of black-matrix in the old RCA's that used a 25XP22, the replacements used to be a 23GV something...... (too many years ago for me to remember) A round matrix is pretty rare as the customer usually did not want to pay the extra $$$$$ on those sets. I just always liked the black-matric type because it usually was a HUGE improvement in the picture.

The "V" after the number designates viewable image area, not necessarily black matrix. This is a different issue than the "V" in the middle of a tube code (like 21GVP22). I believe the government required picture tubes to be measured in actual viewable area rather than total faceplate diagonal around 1973. Therefore one replacement for the 25XP22 would be the 23VALP22. A round color tube would be a "19V" as opposed to a "21". Black and white tubes also began to use the "V" measurement at this time. The "V" type tubes were probably more likely to be black matrix because they were more advanced in technology owing to their more modern dates of manufacture, but if you look in a tube manual you will see that they are not all black matrix.
