Back To The 58 Space Command....
After completing the RCA I had room to break out the Zenith that had me stumped over a year ago. When I brought the set home I had no vertical sweep and only a hum for sound. So I replaced MOST of the caps. I thought repalcing the power supply filters would eliminate the hum. I did ALL electrolytics. No dice. I repaced several resistors and most of the paper caps. The only paper cap left is in the Horiz. section which has always performed well.
The first thing I saw on a fresh look over everything was a maybe 2 watt 680 ohm resistor that looked like it had gotten hot. Well it checks 680k ohms. WOW! I venture to say that is my vertical sweep problem. Still not sure about the rest but sometimes you just have to put something to the side after you get frustrated. I will probably make progress now. It just sucked to darn near replace all the caps and have absolutely no improvement over the way the set started off. I know Zenith used this same basic chassis design for years so if anyone has any tips on these please fill me in. And also I have no remote if anbody has an extra. Thanks |

Well I was wrong about that resistance measurement. Those resistors were actually OK.
I did measure across the vertical output transformer and got around 300 ohms and 10 ohms. Not sure how that pans out. I'll have to dig in my literature to get an idea of acceptable readings. With all the new caps and resistors in this set I feel like there is ONE oddball problem that when found and rectified will zap the set back to like new condition. I'm kind of running out of ideas again... |
