You are right, people are far less do-it-yourself inclined in general these days it seems. The USA is probably worse than other countries; when I have visited ham radio stores in Japan and England, they have far more individual pieces for antenna construction than similar American stores.

I would love to build a Heathkit TV now. All of the kits I built in the late 70's and early 80's went together without a problem. Even a Ramsey ham radio transceiver was a thrill in the mid-90's, hearing good signals from what had been a pile of parts and a board.
